The Ukraine Test

25 Aprilie 2024

The Ukraine Test

Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022 and a column of tanks several kilometres long was gloriously heading towards Kiev.
It was expected to be over in a few days, a couple of weeks at most, with the Ukrainians defeated.

And yet the war continues two years later with huge losses on both sides, but of particular significance are those suffered by the renowned, at least in the collective imagination, Russian army.

Although, if we remember how the Russians retreated after the invasion of Afghanistan, perhaps it is not surprising.

But here’s the bottom line:
– 462,980 – soldiers (almost 1/2 million people);
– 26 warships;
– 348 aircraft;
– 325 helicopters;
– 7,255 tanks;
– 13,942 armoured vehicles.

That’s just against Ukraine, which has been taken by surprise, a country much smaller than the great Russia in terms of territory, resources, army and population.

Despite the huge losses, Russian propaganda is doing its job, threatening its ability to destroy NATO alliance countries.

Of course, bellicose rhetoric aside, the Kremlin is well aware that escalation beyond the NATO security cordon, by attacking a single member of the alliance, would mean the total military destruction of the country.
But above all the depopulation of Russia, whose young people in the army will disappear as a result of imperial ambitions that are absurd for today’s world.

If two years of war with Ukraine have led to the death of almost half a million young people, a confrontation with NATO will lead to the loss of the lives of many millions more young people, i.e. to the ageing and destruction of the country’s future.

That is why Moscow is likely to be desperately seeking solutions to get out of the deplorable situation it finds itself in as honourably as possible after this crazy adventure.
Perhaps one last card will be played by Putin’s scheduled visit to China.

In the meantime, for the health of humanity, the permanent members of the Security Council, thought to be the guarantors of world peace, have an obligation to take their role seriously in order to resolve the conflict.

And perhaps, with responsibility and seriousness, this international institution, designed to mediate and guard the peace of the planet, will find the optimal solution to end the conflict.

It will be an important test of the wisdom of mankind, let us call it the Ukraine Test.

But if, predictably, the permanent members, one of whom is Russia, fail to reach a lasting peace, then the Ukraine Test will prove the futility of the Security Council and thus the credibility of the UN.

Basically, we will be facing the end of the world order established after the end of the Second World War.
